Florida Museum of Natural History: McCarty Woods

Your gift to the McCarty Woods and Campus Natural Areas fund supports the recovery and long-term conservation of University of Florida campus natural areas. These areas serve as teaching labs for multiple departments across campus, provide a space of respite for students, support biodiversity and wildlife, and are an integral part of the university's landscape.

Florida Museum faculty members and a committed corps of volunteers have made incredible progress on the McCarty Woods restoration project. With your support, McCarty Woods will become a model for the restoration of other natural areas around campus.

Donate today to fund the purchase of plants for McCarty Woods, repair of older kiosks, informational signage for plants, the McCarty Woods Genome Sequencing project- sequencing the genomes of iconic trees in the forest for the first time and training UF undergraduates in genomic skills, and general restoration efforts.

Help us raise $5,000 to unlock a matching $5,000 gift from Drs. Doug and Pam Soltis!

FAQ

Can I volunteer to help with the McCarty Woods restoration efforts?

Yes! Join us at McCarty Woods on Oct. 27, for a volunteer day and family-friendly celebration of all we've accomplished! You can pitch in with planting, take guided walks through the woods, learn how to use a plant press, and identify plants and birds with the iNaturalist and Merlin apps. Cleanup starts at 9 a.m. and activities start at 10 a.m.

How can I receive updates and learn about future volunteer opportunities?

Follow the Soltis Lab on X for regular McCarty Woods updates or email development@floridamuseum.ufl.edu and request to have your name added to the McCarty Woods volunteer email list.

Where can I learn more about the updated UF Conservation Area Land Management (CALM) plans?

The latest CALM plan information is available on the CALM Plan Update page. To learn more about conservation areas on campus, visit the UF Office of Sustainability.
